Since the Betsiamites River estuary has ecological characteristics that are essential to maintain the integrity of the St. Lawrence ecosystem, it is important to ensure that current and future anthropogenic activities do not compromise natural resources in the short and long term. It is in this context that the Comité ZIP, in close collaboration with the community of Pessamit, supervised from May 2009 to March 2010 the implementation of an action plan for the enhancement and conservation of the Betsiamites river estuary.
The objectives of the plan are to improve and protect the quality of the environment, habitats and natural resources; to perpetuate sustainable land-use planning and public access to the coast; to promote safe coastal use, and finally, promote traditional and contemporary Innu culture.
