The Comité ZIP Jacques-Cartier's mission is to promote and support through regional concertation, actions aiming the protection, conservation and the rehabilitation of stressed environments as well as promoting citizens access to shorelines through a sustainable development vision. It allows for a concrete form of active participation of all partners, with the goal of implementing measures of rehabilitating and valorizing the Saint-Lawrence River.
The Comité ZIP Jacques-Cartier is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1996. It's main objective is to increase both the quality of life of shoreline residents and the water quality of the Saint-Lawrence which is an essential element in the development of Quebec. It functions as a steering committee in which delegates from private organizations, citizen groups, environmental groups, socioeconomical groups and municipal governments highlight the state of their respective sections of the Saint-Lawrence River. The section of the Saint-Lawrence River in which the Comité ZIP Jacques-Cartier operates is the most densily populated and urbanized of all. As such, many prioritary issues are a direct result of that particularity, notably: contaminated sediments, sewage dumping and pollution.
